Overview & Application
Body Mass Index (BMI) is an internationally recognized anthropometric screening metric endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It correlates an individual's mass and height to categorize body composition into underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity classes. This BMI Calculator supports both Metric (centimeters & kilograms) and Imperial (feet, inches & pounds) systems with instant visual status feedback.

Standard World Health Organization BMI Formula
BMI is defined as a person's weight in kilograms divided by the square of their height in meters. In imperial units, weight in pounds is divided by height in inches squared, multiplied by the conversion factor 703.
Real-World Calculation Scenarios
Metric Measurement (Adult Female)
Scenario: Height: 168 cm (1.68 m), Weight: 62 kg.
BMI = 62 / (1.68 × 1.68) = 62 / 2.8224 = 21.97 kg/m².
Result: 22.0 BMI — categorized as 'Normal Weight' (Healthy range 18.5 – 24.9).
Imperial Measurement (Adult Male)
Scenario: Height: 5 feet 10 inches (70 inches), Weight: 185 lbs.
BMI = (185 × 703) / (70 × 70) = 130,055 / 4,900 = 26.54 kg/m².
Result: 26.5 BMI — categorized as 'Overweight' (Class range 25.0 – 29.9).
